CHANDIGARH, July 7: Protests by Bharatiya Janata Party supporters against the entry and continuation of multinational companies notwithstanding, the Vajpayee government at the Centre has asked the state governments to ensure protection to MNCs.

Protests and sporadic incidents against MNCs were reported from different parts of the country, particularly after the sanctions imposed following the Pokharan blasts.

In a communication to Punjab and Haryana governments and the UT Administration recently, Nikhil Kumar, special secretary in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, stated that the government quot;is committed to uphold the rule of lawquot;. While Chandigarh has no MNC with a production base, many foreign companies and banks have offices in the city.

In a demi-official letter dated June 24, Nikhil Kumar wrote: quot;In the context of attacks or agitations against MNCs, the state governments may recall the earlier advisories sent by this Ministry emphasising the need for state governments to provide adequate protection to the property and personnel of business establishments of multinationals.quot; The letter adds that such steps are more essential in the post-Pokharan political scenario to send the right signal to foreign investors. A UT police official said: quot;We don8217;t have any MNCs as such, only offices. The DSPs and SHOs have been directed to list all such establishments and keep a tab on activity around these offices.quot; He confirmed that no incident of violence involving MNCs and sanctions-related protests has taken place in the city.
