CHANDIGARH, May 13: Panjab University is likely to conduct centralised admission for post-graduate courses in social sciences from the next academic session. Nine teaching departments of the social sciences stream will be involved in the joint admission.
The departments are Economics, Geography, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Public Administration, Sociology and Ancient Indian Culture, History and Archaeology.
Though a formal approval of the Vice-Chancellor and the Syndicate is awaited, the joint admission committee for conducting admission was constituted today. The chairperson of the Department of Political Science, Prof B.S. Brar, will be the convenor of the admission committee, with chairpersons of the other departments as its members.
The admission guidelines committee, which had met on May 4, had recommended that PU should do away with the process of separate admissions for each department and instead move over to centralised admission. Science departments in PU already have centralised admissions.
PU officials said that aspiring students would no longer be required to fill separate admission forms for each department where they wish to seek admission.
In case of centralised admission, the student would be required to indicate his or her priority in the application form itself. The candidate also would not have to shuttle between different departments on the date of admission, it was pointed out.
The university also hopes to decrease the time spent on admission by introducing centralised admission. In case of separate admission by individual departments, students often sought admission in one department only to shift to another when the vacancy arose, a chairperson said.
