The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today formally took over the probe into the fake stamp paper scam from the Stamp Paper Investigation Team (StampIT) in Karnataka.
The CBI team, led by Joint Director Archana Ramasundaram, met StampIT chief ADGP R. Sri Kumar and State Home Secretary K.P. Pandey and sought details of 10 cases of the scam which were registered in the state.
The CBI, which took over investigations following a Supreme Court order, will probe 48 cases of fake stamp paper booked across the country, including 10 in Karnataka. Even before the court’s directions, the Karnataka Government had asked the CBI take charge.
State Police DG & IGP T.Madiyal and senior officers of the CBI were also present during the discussions today at Vidhana Soudha. Later, speaking to reporters, Sri Kumar said StampIT officers will not be attached to the CBI but would be helping them.
With cases being handed over to the CBI, StampIT operations have come to an end. The special team was formed in January 2002 after prime accused Abdul Karim Telgi was arrested from Ajmer in 2001.
StampIT has arrested several people, including former minister Roshan Baig’s brother Dr Rehan Baig, Prisons Department officers Jayasimha and Nanjappa and many associates of Telgi. It had recommended the suspension of five police officers in the state and filed a report against seven more police officers including a retired ADGP and a serving DIG, apart from an ACP.
