PATNA, MAY 23: Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, former MP, was today arrested by the CBI from a house here in connection with the killing of CPIM MLA Ajit Sarkar.

CBI deputy inspector general Patna zone, N C Verma told reporters that an agency team took Yadav into custody from the house allegedly unauthorisedly occupied by the latter. Verma said Yadav, who was carrying a cash prize of Rs 50,000 on his head in the case, was evading CBI dragnet ever since an arrest warrant issued against him a couple of months ago.

He said Yadav would be produced before the court of designated CBI judge here tomorrow for which consultations were being made with the special investigation cell SIC of the agency in New Delhi. The SIC is probing the case after the state government handed over it to CBI following request of Madhvi Sarkar, a sitting CPIM MLA from Purnea and wife of the slain leader last year. Verma claimed the house was raided on the basis of 8220;an authentic information8221; received by a top official of theagency. The CPIM MLA from Purnea, Ajit Sarkar along with his bodyguard was gunned down by unidentified assailants at Purnea on June 14, 1998.
