ROHTAK, OCT 18: This cruel story from a Haryana village is a grim reminder of a millennium-eve Indian reality. A 15-year-old Jat girl fell in love with a 16-year-old Lohar boy. The girl8217;s family allegedly killed both of them on October 14 to salvage its quot;honourquot;.
quot;She flouted the traditions and norms of the society. Therefore, I have no regrets over her death,8221; says Kalawati, mother of the 15-year-old Krishna, of Ismil village, 23 km from Rohtak. quot;I wanted to marry off my daughter. But God wished otherwise. Now I want to forget it as a bad dream,quot; she adds.
Krishna fell in love with Sunil and the Jats of the village warned them not to see each other. On Wednesday night Banni Singh Krishna8217;s uncle and two others went to Sunil8217;s house and threatened him. Late at night, they went there again. According to Jogi Ram, Sunil8217;s uncle, when he tried to stop them at the gate they took out guns and forced their way in.
Two men lifted Sunil from the cot and took him away while Sunil8217;s mother Santosh, his sisterSunita and brother Jagdeep, both younger to him, and others watched helplessly. Sunil8217;s father Jaibhagwan is in the Army and posted at Ambala Cantt.
The family cried for help but no one came out, says Jogi Ram. The next morning, they filed a complaint to the police. An FIR was lodged in the Sampla police station by Sunil8217;s uncle Randhir Singh and a case was registered.
The bodies of Krishna and Sunil were recovered on Friday morning from Dulheda minor near Ismaila village. The bodies were naked.
Though the police rounded up a few suspects for interrogation, no arrests have been made. DSP Subhash Yadav said: quot;Preliminary investigations indicate that the family members of the girl are responsible.quot;
No one in the village wants to talk on record. But most of them feel the quot;punishmentquot; was justified.
