PUNE, April 29: Elected members of the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) have sought an explanation from the board authorities on the action initiated against former cantonment executive officer R S Cheema alleging that he had granted illegal building sanctions.

It may be mentioned here that vice-president Vinod Sanghvi along with the rest of the members had submitted an application to former board president Brig. Mathew Mammen in August last year, alleging that he had illegally granted sanctions to three buildings at 156 M G Road, 691 Taboot Street and 149-A M G Road without seeking the prior freehold sanction from the Union Defence Ministry. The members had also alleged that there were 21 other buildings which had violated the building bye-laws during Cheema’s tenure.

Pandemonium prevailed in the general body meeting on Monday as the agitated members sought to disassociate themselves from the alleged activities.

Heated words were exchanged between Cantonment Executive Officer J Sharma and Vinod Sanghvi. The vice president, who cited the example of cancellation of building permission to Sterling Centre Complex, pointed out that the board could easily initiate action in this case. The CEO however maintained that permission had been granted to these buildings as per the building bye-laws. Yet when the members wanted to know if he would grant similar sanctions, he replied in the negative.

Gautam Mahajan warned that the members would stop attending the appeal meetings unless the cantonment board initiated action by the next meeting. President Brig. Madan Gopal assured him that he would give a detailed reply to them in the next board meeting.

The members demanded that the board scrap the `pay and park’ scheme at M G Road which had opposition from various quarters. Vinod Sanghvi speaking on behalf of the Pune Camp Merchants Association, insisted that the board should scrap the scheme since it was not in the interests of the residents.

The president made it clear that the scheme would be reviewed in June when the three-month trial period would end and a decision would be taken at that stage.
