In a bid to counter the ‘‘adverse propaganda’’ of the Congress and the BJP, the Samajwadi Party has decided to launch a mass awareness campaign to flaunt the achievements of Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.

The campaign will be launched on August 29 to coincide with the completion of one year of the Mulayam government. It has been planned for 10 days but state unit president Ram Saran Das said it may be extended if the party leadership feels the need for it.

‘‘The action plan has been finalised by the CM who was concerned about the harm being done to the image of the party and the government,’’ Das added.

The CM has been under fire from the Congress and the BJP over the increasing incidence of crime and some controversial decisions taken by the government. The two parties have even launched a joint offensive against the Mulayam government’s decision to set up a Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Urdu University with Parliamentary Affairs and Urban Development Minister Mohd Azam Khan as Pro-Vice Chancellor for life. Sources said that party leaders had urged the CM to take immediate steps to undo the damage done to the party.

The party’s city and district unit presidents as well as office-bearers have been given a dossier containing the issues which should be highlighted during the campaign.

The SP plans to showcase the present government’s track record on the law and order front which it says is better than that of previous governments as well as the governments of Delhi and Maharashtra (which are ruled by the Congress). The party also plans to harp on the steps taken by the state government for the benefit of farmers, labourers, students, the minorities, OBCs and Dalits.

Sources said the programme has also been planned to improve the party’s prospects in the coming bypolls.
