NEW DELHI, July 27: The Union Cabinet approved the Action Taken Report on the controversial report of the Jain Commission this evening, clearing the way for both documents to be tabled in Parliament.

Although no date has not been fixed yet, the reports are likely to be placed before Parliament only on July 31 after Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee leaves Colombo at the end of the SAARC Summit. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Madan Lal Khurana was meeting Speaker, GMC Balayogi, tonight to finalise the parliamentary schedule for the next few days. It now appears that despite the vociferous protest from the Opposition in the meeting, the Government will have its way in extending the current session till August 4.

The extension has become inevitable because of a change in Prime Minister Vajpayee8217;s tour itinerary, according to which he would now return to India on July 31, and not July 30 as was originally scheduled.

Since the Lok Sabha had demanded a statement from the Prime Minister on the outcome ofhis Colombo visit, a debate on foreign policy will only be possible on August 3 at the earliest.

The extension of Lok Sabha8217;s budget session would also facilitate the Deputy Speaker8217;s election. Balayogi announced that his deputy would be elected during the current session. A contest for the post now looks inevitable with the ruling combine announcing the name of Rita Verma, a third-term BJP MP from Dhanbad Bihar, as its candidate. Congress has already announced the candidature of PM Sayeed for the post.
