The UPA Cabinet today cleared a pay hike for members of both the Houses of Parliament, a week before the Monsoon Session comes to an end. The last pay hike for the parliamentarians came under the NDA regime in 2001. A Joint Committee on Salaries and Allowances of MPs had submitted its report on May 22, 2006. The committee had proposed an increase in MPs8217; salaries, pensions, constituency and daily allowances.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunshi, however, said wistfully that the Finance Ministry has not accepted all the recommendations. The financial burden has been reduced substantially from the committee8217;s recommendations, except the salary recommended.

The committee had proposed a salary hike from Rs 12,000 per month to Rs 16,000 per month. An increase from Rs 3,000 to Rs 8,000 was mooted on the pension front, while MPs8217; Constituency Allowance was proposed to go up from Rs 14,000 to Rs 31,000. A doubling in the daily allowance from Rs 500 per day to Rs 1,000 per day was also recommended.

However, barring the salaries and the daily allowances hike, the Finance Ministry reduced the other increases proposed by the committee. 8220;The Finance Minister has reduced the proposed pension of Rs 8,000 to Rs 6,000. The additional burden from the hikes would be Rs 60 crore,8221; Dasmunshi said.

Dasmunshi said, 8220;There8217;s no hypocrisy8230; Indian MPs are the worst paid in the world.8221;
