NEW DELHI: The department of telecommunication is expected to put up a cabinet note by Monday proposing migration of existing private cellular and basic telecom operators to a revenue sharing regime.
Telecom Commission chairman Anil Kumar held a series of meetings with top DoT officials on Friday to finalise the details of the cabinet note. The note will be forwarded to the prime minister for final approval, sources said. The cabinet is likely to give its approval to the revenue sharing regime at its meeting scheduled for Tuesday. Though DoT officials were tightlipped over the details of the cabinet note being prepared, sources said the department may recommend revenue sharing for vacant circles while insisting that existing licence holders be asked to pay the licence fee till a certain cut-off date. Thereafter, the existing operators would be allowed to switch over to a revenue sharing system.
