LDF’s victory has put party strongman V S Achutanandan in an unassailable position for the Chief Minister’s post in Kerala. Party sources said it would now be impossible to ignore his claims to the post. The CM’s name will be announced in Kerala after the state secretariat meets next week, but the decision will be taken by the Politburo on Saturday.
The big question now for the LDF would be who will take over as the home minister. The party has before it the Bengal option where the Chief Minister holds the post. The Politburo will also consider the composition of the Cabinet, but the final decision will be taken in Kerala.
If recent events are any indication, there could still be some balancing left to do on the Cabinet berths. Speaking on Thursday, party general secretary Prakash Karat had reiterated that the MLAs will accept the party’s decision (on the chief ministership and other Cabinet posts).
According to a party insider, putting Achutanandan in the CM’s post is a blessing of sorts. The downside stems from anxiety that the public perception of the leader as being a hardliner and anti-development —which UDF leaders fanned, unsuccessfully during the electioneering —may do harm in the long-run. Yet, it must accept his claim now. ‘‘He changed the dynamics of the entire election campaign,’’ the source said.
Achutanandan has also proved that his steadfast opposition to an alliance with Karunakaran, despite Pinarayi doggedly advocating it, was right. He has given every indication that he will push ahead with the advantage, stating that he will take action against those involved in sex scandals and corruption cases, a none-too-veiled message to his detractors.
