
A BSP leader, Ganga Singh Kushwaha, was arrested on Monday fornbsp;attempting to rape a woman in Beheta Bujurg village under Ghatampur police station. Singh, the BSP general secretary for Bithoor Assembly seat, has denied the charge.
Rajendra Sharma, the woman8217;s husband, said Singh had visited his house onnbsp;Saturday nightnbsp;and asked him tonbsp;call anbsp;villager, Devi Prasad. When he went out, Singh tried to rape his wife at gunpoint.
Hearing her cries, neighbours rushed in butnbsp;Singh tried to browbeat them. Angry villagersnbsp;thrashed him and he took shelter in the house ofnbsp;BSP legislatornbsp;Ram Prakash Kushwaha.
The villagersnbsp;pelted stones at the legislator8217;s residence and tried tonbsp;set Singh8217;s motorcyclenbsp;on fire. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;
Locals said Singh and his wife Gayatri, a formernbsp;Zila Panchayat member, tried to pacify Sharma on Sunday butnbsp;did not succeed. Sharma lodged a complaint with thenbsp;police.
Refuting the charges, Singh said: 8220;I had given a loan to Sharma and had gone to his house to recover the amount. Sharma had made a falsenbsp;allegationnbsp;against me to avoidnbsp; the payment.8221;
The BSP legislator denied having any knowledge about the incident. He said, 8220;A inquiry will be set up and action will be taken against the guilty.8221;
Superintendent of Police Kanpur Rural Lal Bahadur said, 8220;Some incidents of violence were reported in the village on Saturday evening but peace has been restored since then.8221; A case has been registered and investigations are on, he added.
