The power distribution company discom BSES received an 8220;in principle8221; approval from the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission DERC to set up a 1,400-MW power plant in the city to tackle the increasing electricity crisis.

Plans to set up the plant have been under discussion for more than two years now, and a power department official said the green signal from the DDA has come for a 160-acre plot in Tikri village in Southwest Delhi. But while the technical committee has given the go-ahead, BSES will have to wait till the DDA meets on December 17 for a clear and complete approval.

The approval will involve a change in land-use norms and DDA officials reckon it will take at least four to six months before possession of land is handed over to the discom.

The approximate budget for the proposed plant has been pegged at Rs 7,000 crore, and sources in the power department said they expect it start operations within 36 months after BSES gets possession of land. According to plans handed over to the Delhi government, the plant is proposed to be run on gas.

Besides this proposed plant, a 1500-MW plant is under construction in Bawana. The last power plant set up in the Capital was the Pragati power plant, commissioned in 2003. The total generation of Delhi8217;s five power plants oscillates between 1200 MW to 1300 MW, against a demand ranging between 3500 MW and 4000 MW.
