BJP-MGP split helped Cong: NCP

Nationalist Congress Party NCP leader and opposition leader in the Maharashtra Legislative Council Chhagan Bhujbal today said the narrow win for Congress in the Goa assembly elections was due to a little benefit that accrued because of a division between the Bharatiya Janata Party BJP and Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party MGP8217;.

The outcome would have no repercussions either in Maharashtra or at the national level, Bhujbal said refuting a claim by MPCC vice president Gurudas Kamat that the electoral result was a clear indication of confidence reposed in leadership of congress president Sonia Gandhi and reflected poorly on issues raised by certain expelled congressmen8217;.

Bhujbal, a protege of NCP president Sharad Pawar, observed, 8220;We don8217;t count Goa result much as its a very small state and not even equal to three or four municipal wards of the Mumbai megapolis.8221;

Gurudas Kamat, former Member of Parliament andvice-president Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee MPCC, congratulated the Congress leadership, both at the Centre and in Goa, for the clear cut mandate that they have received from the people of Goa.

Kamat stated that this emphatic victory in Goa coming as it does in the wake of irrelevant issues raised by certain Congressmen who have been expelled from the party recently, is a clear indication that the Goans have preferred a stable government of a strong party led by Sonia Gandhi. This mandate was a clear indication of the confidence reposed in the leadership of Sonia Gandhi and was a clear indicator of the results that would follow in the forthcoming Lok Sabha and the assembly elections, according to Kamat.
