SYDNEY, AUGUST 2: Australian fast-bowler Brett Lee has been cleared of chucking, the Australian Cricket Board (ACB) announced on Wednesday.
Lee was reported for throwing during Australia’s tour of New Zealand in March but was cleared to continue playing after an International Cricket Council (ICC) panel reviewed his case on Tuesday night.
ACB chairman Mal Speed told a news conference on Wednesday that Lee’s clearance meant he was free to take his place in this month’s limited-overs series with South Africa.
“The panel determined Lee did not have a problem with his bowling action,” Speed said.
Lee, who was named last month as Wisden’s Young Player of the Year, said he was always confident the ICC would clear him of a suspect action and was looking forward to putting the matter behind him.
But Speed said that his clearance did not mean that he could not be reported again in the future. “That’s something which is an occupational hazard of being the world’s fastest bowler,” Speed said.
Lee was reported to the ICC after Australia’s tour of NewZealand in March when he captured 18 wickets at an average of 17.44. The ICC’s Illegal Deliveries panel studied a series of slow-motion replays of Lee’s bowling action before discussing it during a 75-minute international teleconference.
The panel was made up of former international cricketersfrom each of the world’s 10 test-playing countries.
