
Bangalore, June 17: Fancied Punjab survived by skin of their teeth against Pondicherry while Bombay extended their superb run to notch up their second big successive victory in the league matches in the Tatas 30th Junior National Hockey Championship here today.
Punjab faced anxious moments during their 2-1 victory over Pondicherry in their lung opener. Pondicherry had drubbed Rajasthan 5-1 in their first match yesterday.
Bombay boys budding with talent held sway thrashing Hyderabad 9-0. On Wednesday, they had notched up an impressive 6-1 win over Himachal Pradesh.
Bombay, after their impressive show on the first day8217;s win, continued in the same vein with forwards Asad Khan, Brijesh Singh and skipper Viren Rosquinha bringing the Hyderabad citadel under constant pressure.
The Bombay boys scored at will with star striker Asad Khan scoring two more goals 29th and 44th minutes taking his tally to six from two matches. Brijesh Singh 12th and 49th, Viren Rasquinha 53rd and 70th, Vijay Alphonso 41st,Conroy Remidius 54th and Gurmeet Singh Rao 70th scored the other goals.

Punjab started well and were in the lead in the very first minute. Jugraj Singh converted the first penalty corner in the very first minute of the match. Throughout the match, Punjab lacked cohension. Jugraj made it 2-0 in the 23rd minute converting the second penalty corner. K Sathees Kumar reduced the margin for Pondicherry oneminute before the lime break.
With Punjab trying to hold on to the slender lead and Pondicherry striving for the equaliser, rough tackles were more often witnessed. Twice yellow cards were pulled and three times green cards were shown.
