MUMBAI, JUNE 29: President of the Bombay Gymkhana Club, Gautam Thakkar, has agreed to meet members of the club on July 5 to make a “complete disclosure” on the Sunil Gavaskar locker affair. This being the only outcome of the much-awaited meeting of the managing commitee today, it seems members of the committee, who were last Friday baying for Thakkar’s blood and threatening to resign if Thakkar did not, had today decided that it wasn’t worth it.

After all the heat and dust raised at the last two meetings, and the expectations that were raised, today’s meeting turned out to be a tame affair.

Thakkar was being asked to own responsibilty for all the adverse attention the club is getting from the Income Tax department following the expose in this paper about the contents of Gavaskar’s locker, and for having kept the committee in the dark for so long. But on Wednesday, it was almost as if the entire managing committee was suffering from a convenient bout of amnesia.

Apparently, the vocal members in the managing committee were persuaded by friends that their en masse resignations would not serve any purpose since Thakkar and Co would only be too glad to have them out.

But it is now the general body members who have got active. Yesterday, club members who met in an impromptu meeting inside the club’s premises itself, displayed great agitation at the fact that the developments in the club were made known to them by this newspaper rather than by their own president and committee. It is this expression that seems to have resulted in today’s decision regarding the July 5 meeting. Since the members are quite agitated, the formalities of issuing a 21-day notice, etc are being done away with, sources said.

There are however, problems here too. Some members are asking how Thakkar will chair the meeting on July 5 when he himself is at the centre of the controversy, given his close friendship with Gavaskar, and also questions about how the former captain got away with such special privileges as using the locker without paying for it.
