New Delhi, May 5: The Bharatiya Janata Party today demanded that the CPM and the Janata Dal should explain their stand on the Bofors pay-offs as they had at one time joined the mass resignations from parliament on the issue, indicating how vital an issue Bofors was turning out to be for the coming polls.
Recalling how the BJP and its allies were in the forefront in campaigning against the kickbacks, BJP spokesman M Venkaiah Naidu said the CPM, CPI, JD had resigned along with the BJP from the Lok Sabha on the Bofors issue. Now that the real reason has been exposed, we want to know what is their stand.
Welcoming the presidential sanction for prosecution former external affairs minister Madhavsinh Solanki for his alleged handing over of a letter to the Swiss authorities to go slow on the inquiry into the Bofors case, he said that after 12 years, it was the BJP-led coalition government that was taking the scam to its logical conclusion.
“It is now clear that the Congress leadership became active to topple the Vajpayee government after getting wind of the prosecution. The former external affairs minister can now spill the beans about who had directed him to carry the controversial letter to go slow on the inquiry. All efforts will fail to suppress the truth,” Naidu said.
Naidu was critical about the the CPM describing the President’s action as a political action and asked why did they at the first instance resign enmasse from the Lok Sabha. “Are they regretting their earlier action. And rethinking their alliance with the Congress?”
