GUWAHATI, AUGUST 21: Bodo MLA Mohini Basumatary was shot dead on Monday by Bodo militants in Assam, just two days after the killing of litterateur Bineswar Brahma. Police suspect that the killings are part of a plan to eliminate those supporting the cause of Bodo unification.

National Democratic Front of Bodoland militants attacked the house of the 35-year-old MLA from Assam’s Bijni constituency and representing the People’s Democratic front (PDF) at Gargaon, Bongaigaon district. The assailants came in two vehicles, one of them belonging to the MLA. When Basumatary fled to the backyard, they chased him there and shot him, said witnesses.

Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS) President Bineswar Brahma, who was killed by NDFB ultras on Saturday in Guwahati, also favoured Bodo unification, police said.

Basumatary was elected to the Assembly in 1997.
