BHUBANESWAR, May 18: Orissa8217;s Deputy Chief Minister and senior Congress leader, Basanta Kumar Biswal has suggested that an age limit should be prescribed for holding various posts within the party.

8220;When an age limit exists for holding positions in government offices, courts of law and other constitutional posts, there is no reason why it should not apply to political parties,8221; Biswal said today. The party should fix the age limit for sponsoring candidates for various positions, both inner party positions and also for various offices in the government and other posts, he said, adding elder party leaders should take up advisory roles in areas of their expertise.

Biswal said he had aired his views while speaking at the extended Congress Working Committee meeting held at Delhi on May 15 and 16 last.

The senior Congress leader said that the party8217;s credibility would go up if organisational elections could be conducted through an independent election machinery adopting a simplified electionprocedure.

Biswal said the deliberations at the CWC meeting were based on the recommendations of the task force headed by former Lok Sabha speaker, P A Sangma to revitalise the party.

He emphasised that a system should be evolved for raising party funds through various means including membership fees and donations from individuals and organisations.

But the guidelines should be such that there was absolute transparency in collection and utilisation of party funds, he said.

The CWC, he said, should undertake a detailed exercise in evolving the strategy to be adopted for each election while much importance should be attached to providing clear guidelines for selection of candidates. The right candidate should be chosen to win the polls while post-election analysis should be conducted to pinpoint the shortcomings.
