Gandhinagar, March 23: Responding to a directive from the Centre, the Government is all set to repeal the Urban Land Ceiling ULC Act by introducing a Bill in the Assembly tomorrow.

quot;We are tabling the Bill tomorrow to repeal the Act in the Statequot;, Revenue Minister Vajubhai Vala told the House, while replying to a debate on the budgetary demands of his department. The Centre has repealed the Act and directed the States concerned to follow the suit.

The announcement came in response to a query by Leader of the Opposition Amarsinh Chaudhary on whether the Government intended to repeal the Act.Chaudhary said farmers in the urban areas were facing hardship after the government decision to amend the town planning laws, and feared that their woes would multiply if the ULC Act was not repealed.

Vala refuted Chaudhary8217;s charge that his department had released post-haste over one lakh sq mtrs of land under the ULC before the decision to table the Bill in the House and this quot;smacks of corruptionquot;.

The controversial Vadodara vaccine institute land deal also figured when Chaudhary alleged that the Government decision to regrant about a 14,600-sq-mtr plot to the original owners at a throw-away price quot;is anti-people and smacks of corruptionquot;. He demanded that the land be auctioned to mop up more revenue.

To this, Vala said it was the Vaghela government8217;s decision to regrant the land to its original owners at Rs 3,200 per sq mtr although the market price in the Old Padra Road area in Vadodara was about Rs 10,000 per sq mtr. quot; Our government wants to dereserve the plot at a much higher pricequot;, Vala said, without saying what price the government had decided on.
