He went in with good intentions, of proving before the country that politicians are nice people. But Sanjay Nirupam has become the first to be voted out of the reality show Bigg Boss.

Yet, the Congress leader, the first ‘celebrity’ contestant to be ousted on channel Colors’ show, says he is relived to be out. Nirupam was evicted on Friday afternoon. “I missed my family,” he says of his week spent indoors and incommunicado. “I’m going to spend lots of time with my daughter and then will resume daily activities,” obviously not referring to toilet-cleaning and dance-contest judging, things he was made to do at the Bigg Boss house, in Lonavala.

Nirupam, who got some flak for making a misogynist statement about ‘item girls’ to starlet Sambhavna Seth, was eager to clarify. He said it was nothing more than a casual remark in which he stated that while most Indian women are dignified, item girls are expected to show skin.
