MARSEILLE, June 11: The long wait is over for France tomorrow when they start their quest to become the first host nation to win the World Cup in 20 years by taking on debutants South Africa in Group C. France won a trophy in glorious style the last time they staged a major soccer championship when Michel Platini led a swashbuckling French side to the European title in 1984.
Now they hope to win soccer8217;s ultimate prize and become the first home World Champions since Argentina in 1978. Semifinalists in the World Cups of 1982 and 1986 in the heyday of Platini, Alain Giresse and Jean Tigana, France faltered badly when that era ended and failed to reach the World Cup finals of 1990 and 1994.
South Africa have nothing to lose as they enter the finals for the first time after being eliminated in the opening qualifying round on their World Cup debut in 1994.
France have the greater pedigree, but South Africa8217;s French-born coach Philippe Troussier is in defiant mood by pinning his hopes on the attacking verveof his team.
South Africa have made up for the lost years of international isolation and twice reached the African Nations Cup final, winning in 1996.
The match will be a special occasion for the team8217;s keyman playmaker Zinedine Zidane, who was born in Marseille. 8220;To start the World Cup in Marseille is a dream,8221; he said. 8220;I8217;ve been thinking about this match for months.8221;
