
NEW DELHI, August 25: Six teams in men8217;s and an equal number in women8217;s section will participate in the 25th edition of Nike-St Stephen8217;s College Invitational Basketball Tournament to be held at the college courts here from August 27 to September 2.
The tournament, to be sponsored by Nike, who will be giving prizes worth over Rs one lakh, will be played on league-cum-knockout basis. The winners will be richer by Rs 42,000 and runners-up will get Rs 21,000. A special rolling trophy for the special edtion will also be given away to the winners.
Men: Group A: Hindu, KMC, Alumni. Group B: St Stephen8217;s, SRCC, Zakir Husain.
Women: Group A: St Stephen8217;s, Alumni, I.P. Group B: JMC, LSR, SRCC.
Diwan triumphs
Gaurav Dewan won the 27th Challenger of the Pepsi Cool Pool Play-Offs at King8217;s Court Pool Club, Noida here today. Gaurav won the event beating Sunder Iyer 2-0. He won this championship without dropping a single frame, a commendable considering he was up against a relatively strong field.
Sunder, who has been playing well to be ranked in the top 20, got his best chance to win the first event. But he did not anticipate stiff opposition from Gaurav, who beat him not only in the finals but in an earlier match too.
The top eight positions in this Challenger were: Gaurav Dewan winner, Sunder Iyer runner-up, Ripu Daman 3rd, Nikhil 4th, Karan Sharda, Rohit Gulati joint 5th, Rohan Maini, Ramneek Singh joint 7th. The next Challenger will be held at South Campus Pool Academy at 11 am on August 28.
Harish wins nHarish Sharma won the first Kingkoil Open chess championship at the Russian Cultural Centre here today. Harish Sharma scored 6.5 points out of seven in the even number of rounds. In the final match, he was held to a draw by KBL Srivastva of DDA who scored 5.5 points and was placed fourth. Other prize winners include KBL Srivastva, DS Negi, Brigu Raj, MG Kalra, RS Tiwari, Ashwin Chhiber, SR Hussain, Updesh Sharma, JP Srivastva, Samunder Kumar, SK Sharma and Anurag Pawar. Among the children section, R Srinivasan, Mainsh Unial, Siddharath Narain, Rohit Gupta and Anurudh Aggarwal were given prizes.
Goalless draw
A fine display by City Club custodian Narender Kumar helped his team snatch a vital point when they held formidable Indian Nationals to a goalless draw in a group I DSA-SAIL superleague match at theAmbedkar Stadium here today. The fast-paced game had equal exchanges but it was Kumar8217;s grit that saved the day for City. By virtue of this draw, Nationals have secured seven points from three games whileCity, from four matches, have two points.
