MUMBAI, MARCH 16: Mohammed Azharuddin feels that there would be a keen fight among the World Cup probables in the forthcoming triangular series at home to grab berths in the squad to England to take part in cricket’s showpiece event in May-June.

“There are a lot of newcomers in the squad and I hope they do well and come out with flying colours. There would be tremendous competition for World Cup berths,” the Indian captain told PTI here today.

Azhar, who was retained as the National team’s skipper till the end of the May 14-June 20 World Cup, expressed his happiness on being given the job at the helm. He said he was not surprised the selectors decided to name the captain so much in advance.

Azhar, who is poised to equal West Indian Clive Lloyd’s record of leading his country in three editions of the Cup, said it was very important that India win the next two limited overs tournaments — at home from March 19-April 4 and at Sharjah from April 7-16. That would be the ideal confidence-booster for themost important event in England, he said.

“We did not do well in the Tests. If we can win both these (one-day) tournaments it would be good for our confidence,” the Indian skipper said.

Asked how he felt taking on Pakistan once again after the recent reverses in the Test arena, Azhar said they were different ball games. There are no chances of making a comeback in the limited overs type.

“The team performing better on a particular day will win in one-day cricket. You cannot come back (after doing badly). You have to be on your toes always,” he said.

About master batsman Sachin Tendulkar’s absence for the first two matches in the tri-series at home, Azhar said the team would definitely miss the former’s presence. “He is a tremendous player and we will definitely miss him. He has played a lot of cricket like all of us. It is better he takes sufficient rest and recovers. We don’t want him to break down during the World Cup,” he added.
