
CALCUTTA, JUNE 1: The West Bengal unit of the Indian Union Muslim League IUML has suffered a split today with 26 office-bearers pulling out of the organisation to form the Progressive Muslim League PML.
The state unit has split over the issue of alliance with the Trinamool Congress in the coming elections. Speaking to newsmen here on Monday, PML general secretary Dr M Nuruzzaman said: 8220;Following a high-level meeting of the office-bearers, we have decided to dissociate with the IUML as it failed to protect the interests of the minority in the state and in the country.8221;
Nuruzzaman said in the given political situation 8220;we have decided to forge alliance with the Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee.8221;
On the issue of Trinamool Congress8217; association with the BJP, Nuruzzaman said: 8220;We feel the Congress has done more damages to the cause of minority than the BJP.8221; He felt that 8220;as long as the BJP does not take any anti-minority step, we have no problem in forming an alliance with the Trinamool Congress.8221;
He said the IUML has ceased to be party outside Kerala and 8220;there too is functioning as the B team of the Congress.8221;
Incidentally, the PML was formed in 1968 under the leadership of late A K M Hassan Uzzaman, father of Nuruzzaman, but later it merged with the IMUL.
