MANCHESTER, July 15: Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has expressed fears for the safety of David Beckham after the mid-fielder became the target of abuse following England8217;s World Cup exit.

Beckham, 23, has been widely vilified after his sending of in England8217;s second round defeat at the World Cup. His father, Ted, also said the player would consider a move abroad if the abuse carried on.

8220;I spoke to David recently and he hardly mentioned football. He8217;s feeling very low and very apprehensive about the whole thing,8221; Ted Beckham said.8220;He8217;ll go back to training with United, but after that, I don8217;t know. It8217;s early to say whether he8217;ll stay or go abroad. All he wants to do is play football.8221;

Beckham was shown the red card for aiming a kick at Argentina8217;s Diego Simeone. England subsequently lost the match on penalties.

Ferguson has already called for extra security when United travel to London club West Ham on August 22. A banner reading Beckham: August 22 8212; hell8217; was found pinned to the maingates of the club last week.

An effigy of Beckham was also strung up outside a London pub on the eve of the player8217;s return from holiday in America with fiancee and Spice girl Victoria Adams.

Beckham returned to training yesterday. 8220;Whatever is necessary, Manchester United will do it,8221; said Ferguson yesterday.
