CHANDIGARH, Sept 17: The Beant Singh assassination case was adjourned today following an objection by the defence counsel over the admissibility of a prosecution witness8217; statement.
On the very onset today, the defence counsel objected to the deposition of witness Parnav Sen 8212; a development officer with an insurance company 8212; regarding accused Gurmeet Singh8217;s alleged statement about the conspiracy to assassinate the former chief minister. They stated that the statement was not admissible in evidence.
The CBI counsel, on the other hand, contended that the issue regarding the statement8217;s admissibility was to be decided at a later stage. The issue will now be taken up before UT District and Sessions Judge B S Bedi tomorrow.
Earlier, during the proceedings, the witness stated that he was summoned to the CBI office on September 8, 1995. He was told that accused Gurmeet Singh wanted to make a statement which he should hear as an independent witness.
