Over a week before the Champions Trophy, Indian cricket officialdom will have its own version of a mini World Cup — the BCCI annual general body meeting.Scheduled to be held on September 27-28 at the CCI in Mumbai, the highlight will be the election of various office-bearers including the president. While current chief Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar is likely to dominate the ballot part, the AGM is also expected to ratify two key proposals: three-year terms for office-bearers and selectors. The other issue that is likely to be the buzz at and around the meeting will be the charge of financial irregularity against former chief Jagmohan Dalmiya regarding the 1996 World Cup accounts. Besides, a host of reports and recommendations, including those from secretary Niranjan Shah and treasurer N Srinivasan, and the multi-million dollar Nimbus TV deal will be up for ratification.Unlike last November though, when Pawar toppled Dalmiya’s man Ranbir Singh Mahendra by nine votes to bring a 15-year regime crashing down, the focus this time may be more on the three-year terms, particularly for the selectors. Proposed during a special general body meeting this June, the move would signify the first step towards a more professional selection set-up, rather than the one-year terms and extensions that has been the norm so far.
