CALCUTTA, FEB 13: In one of the most thrilling finishes on the golf tour this season, defending champion Basad Ali beat overnight leader Vijay Kumar to successfully defend his Cyanamid Open Golf title at the RCGC here today.

Vijay Kumar bogied his last two holes, while Basad Ali made a brilliant birdie on the 18th hole during a three-under 69 round to aggregate 283, one shot better than Vijay Kumar.

In the third place was classic Indian open champion Feroze Ali, who shot two-under today to tally two-under 286 for four rounds.The winning cheque was worth Rs 83,3000 for Basad, while Vijay had to be content with Rs 55,550.

Color plus open champion Sanjay Kumar moved up with a two-under 70 round to take the fourth place at one-over 289 and Rafiq Ali, the youngest brother of Feroze, was fifth at 292. Mohammed Islam of Patna took the sixth position with 293, while Indrajit Bhalotia and Uttam singh Mundy were joint seventh with 294.

In the amateur section, Arjun Singh won the title with a tally of 318.Anshuman Fogla and Atul Almal tied for the second spot at 325, but Fogla was declared runner up on the basis of better score in last 36 holes.

Randhawa joint fourth
DUBAI: Indian pro Jyoti Randhawa fired two under par 70 to be joint fourth after third round, four-shots adrift of the leaders at the Dubai desert classic golf.

Randhawa, who yesterday came up with a brilliant round of 69 following one over par 73 from the first round, now has an aggregate of 212 for the fourth position.

He was tied with Britain’s Colin Montgomerie, Lee Westwood and Anthony Wall.

Australian Wayne `Radar’ Riley joined Englishman David Howell on the top with an aggregate of 208. The leaders were two strokes ahead of two more Englishmen, U S based Ed Fryatt (70) and Warren Bennet (71), who outshot playing partner Mark O’Meara by six shots, and Spain’s Miguel Jimenez (70).

Randhawa has a fine chance to finish on top five alongwith who’s who of the international circuit if he keeps his today’s form.
