CHANDIGARH, April 21: The Beant Singh assassination trial, which was deferred on April 5 till today, resumed after the accused in the case broke the fast following their baptism by the panj piaras.

The trial continued with witness Jasbir Singh, a retired constable in Punjab police, being cross examined. It may be recalled that accused Balwant Singh was living in Jasbir Singh8217;s house at Patiala.

The witness stated that during those days Balwant was working as a gunman for a correspondent of Punjabi daily, Jagbani. When asked whether he had any proof of Balwant8217;s being his tenant, the witness said that he had none.

He stated that the CBI and the customs people came to his house on September 5 and said that they wanted to search Balwant8217;s room. He, however, said that he did not enquire in what context did they want to search the room.

When questioned by the defence counsel whether the visitors had disclosed who they were, the witness said that they disclosed the same only after all of them entered the room after breaking open the lock.

He stated that prior to September 5, he had seen Balwant on August 28. quot; That day he told me that he was going to his village for about eight to ten days, quot; he said. He also stated that before September 5, no one came enquring about Balwant.

It was further added that about five months later, the CBI collected the items which were left behind. quot; They left a list of collected items with my wife, quot; the witness said.
