The Oshiwara police have solved a case of bag snatching that took place a year ago. Two youths had snatched a bag containing jewellery and ornaments worth Rs. 6.5 lakh from a woman near Hotel Shabari in Oshiwara on September 29 2007. The police arrested the two youths identified as Anthony Fernandez (23) and Ramazan Shaikh (25) from the Oshiwara area. After preliminary inquiries, the police also arrested two women in whose possession the bag had been left.
ACP Dilip Suryavanshi (DN Nagar division) said, “The bag- snatching incident had happened on September 29 last year when the complainant, one Amruta Zaveri (42), a businesswoman dealing in gold jewellery and ornaments was at the Oshiwara area with a bag containing the ornaments. Two youths who had been following her for some time snatched the bag and fled away.” Though Zaveri raised an alarm, however the youths could not be caught and she approached the Oshiwara police station where a case was registered against the two unidentified persons.
“Initially, during the investigations, we could not get any clues about their identities or whereabouts. However, in the month of December, our officers received confidential information about the whereabouts of the two youths who had committed the bag- snatching. These two men kept tabs on Zaveri’s movements as they probably knew that she always had valuable ornaments in her bag,” said Suryavanshi.
They duo admitted to the crime and told the cops that the bag had been kept with a mother and daughter duo so that they could sell the valuables.
“Based on this information, we recently arrested the two women, identified as Kamrunissa Sayyad (45) and her daughter, Tabrunissa Sayyad (18) and produced them in court on Friday to get a police remand. Once they are sentenced to police remand, we shall be making inquiries to trace the bag,” added Suryavanshi.
