Avalanches threat to army installations

Chandigarh, Aug 23: Avalanche hazards in the snow bound regions of the Himalayas are a threat to military installations and the civilian population. This was stated by Maj Gen S.S. Sharma, Director, Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment SASE.

Sharma spoke about the various factors which trigger an avalanche, forecasting the onset of avalanches, types of avalanches and methods of mitigating the hazards, to a select gathering of geoscientists at the Centre of Advanced Study in Geology CASG, Panjab University. Earlier, Prof R.S. Chaudhari, chairman and director CASG, apprised the gathering of SASE.
