PUNE, Feb 2: The Maharashtra Rickshaw Sena MRS sponsored agitation turned violent on Monday as the MRS president Nana Kshirsagar and his eight associates were arrested on charges of damaging the vehicles of three-seater automen who did not participate in the protest.
Kshirsagar, however, has denied the charges and issued a press release saying that the agitation would continue till the six-seater autorickshaws are banned in city limits.
Police said the MRS workers were arrested after a three-seater autorickshaw driver from Parvati, Suryakant Prabhakar Bagal, lodged an FIR accusing them of damaging four autorickshaws.
Among the other arrested MRS workers were Shivaji Shankar Vanjari, Salim Faquirmohammed Bagwan, Vitthal Ramchandra Kamble, Ganesh Shankarrao Gose, Dharmpal Bapu Kamble, Raju Hiralal Pardeshi , Sirar Sidram Ratnagire and Bapu Dadu Bobade.
Police said about 50 agitators, who were proceeding toward Swargate from the MRS office in Guruwar Peth, tore the hoods of the four autorickshaws operating near Rashtrabhushan Chowk on Shivaji Road around 10.15 a.m. Traffic on busy Shivaji Road was thrown out of gear for about half an hour as over 50 three-seater automen staged demonstrations in front of Khadak police station to condemn the arrest of their leader. The situation came under control after assistant commissioner Makrand Ranade intervened.
