Union HRD Minister Murli Manohar Joshi today admitted that police all over the country behaved indifferently when it comes to checking the growing crimes against women.

He said it was true that in a majority of cases of child abuse and juvenile rape, policemen were hesitant to even register an FIR. He singled out UP for being the state with the highest crime rate against women and proportionate police apathy for a serious follow-up.

8216;8216;Take the case of the three-month-old baby who was raped in Kheri in December. First, the police refused to register an FIR and when they did, they mentioned it as a case of injury, not rape.8217;8217; The child is under treatment in AIIMS and the government has announced it will bear her expenses till she becomes an adult.

Joshi was releasing a booklet published by the National Commission for Women to launch an awareness campaign on women8217;s rights.
