
UNITED NATIONS: UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on Thursday called for the universality8217; of human rights on the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Human Rights. 8220;I began this anniversary year by reaffirming the universality of human rights, and by arguing that human rights are foreign to no culture and native to all nations,8221; Annan in prepared remarks before the UN General Assembly. He made no reference to the creation of an international criminal court on rights abuse.
ISLAMABAD: Accusing successive afghan leaders of savagely assaulting the rights8217; of women, dozens of Afghan women protested outside UN offices in the Pakistani capital on Thursday to mark the anniversary of the Declaration of Rights. They attacked the Islamic law imposed by Taliban which controls roughly 90 per cent of the country. The protest was organised by the revolutionary association of the women of Afghanistan, headquartered in Pakistan because its members are unable to return fearingTaliban.
BEIJING: President Jiang Zemin vowed on Thursday to fully safeguard the democratic rights of the Chinese people while his police force intensified their crackdown on dissidents. In a statement to mark the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, Jiang pledged to push forward the progress of human rights in China. But his words came as the founder of the outlawed Opposition China Demoracy Party faced trial on sedition charges, two otherprominent dissidents were officially charged and scores of lesser-known activists detained for questioning.
