Education system in India needs to give equal weightage to art and creativity feels artist Subhash Awchat

His dexterity in the field of art and literature puts him in a position to comment on almost everything and anything related to art. With an immense contribution to the canvas and books like Madam and Studio on his name, artist Subhash Awchat who was at Brainworks Learning Centre in Lohegaon for the launch of book series for children by Popular Prakashan titled- Mom, Dad and I, spoke about the importance of creativity in children8217;s lives.

8220;I was a teacher and it was during those days that I realised the importance of inculcating artistic values in children at an early age. Considering the fact that the brain has two parts the artistic part needs to be developed equally,8221; feels the artist.

Commenting on the education system in India he says, 8220;One of the most important aspects of childhood is creativity and our education system is unfortunately neglecting that part of learning. In this case, we need to follow some of the techniques followed abroad. I will give you a simple example, if it is P for parrot in India; it is P for Picasso abroad for children. And I firmly believe that whether a child intends to take up art as the career is a different story altogether. But he or she should be exposed to art well in advance so that at the time of making decision, art can be considered as an option equivalent to engineering and medical.8221;

Child art for Awchat starts right from the lines that a child draws on the walls as he adds, 8220;This is abstract painting isn8217;t it? And this needs to be encouraged. I have observed that contrary to most of the adults who are unable to interpret the abstract paintings of great artists, children have a better understanding of abstract. The major reason behind this is the fact that a child does not know logic and is thus free from inhibitions and more open to different and out-of-the-box ideas.8221;

Awchat himself looks at art as a parallel career and expresses satisfaction saying, 8220;The scenario is changing and schools and parents today are encouraging their children to learn art and related subjects. I personally feel that irrespective of career selection which comes much later in a child8217;s life, introduction to art is important in order to develop a personality.8221;
