NEW DELHI, FEBRUARY 28: An army officer was killed when he led an attackagainst ULFA militants, killing three of them, in Nowgong district of Assam,Army said here on Monday.

Lt Mayekar Narendra Atmaram was grievously injured when he was fired upon bythe militants hiding in a village during a cordon and search operation onSaturday. Despite bleeding profusely, Atmaram charged against the militantsregardless of his injuries and killed two of them in a hand-to-hand fight,an Army spokesman said, adding the officer refused to be evacuated till theraid was completed.

The officer succumbed to his injuries in hospital, while the third militantwas killed by Armymen in an exchange of fire. The Armymen, led by Atmaram,had chased the militants through three villages and struck them in thefourth one.

The militants killed were identified as Tridip Bhuyan, `finance secretaryof’ `Madhyamik Anchalik Parishad’ of ULFA and Ranjani Bordoloi and Dhan Bora.
