Clashes between supporters of Gorkha groups, including the Subhash Ghising-led Gorkha National Liberation Front GNLF, rocked Darjeeling on Friday with Army kept on standby even as prohibitory orders were promulgated.

During the day, clashes erupted between supporters of the GNLF and Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council DGHC employees on the one hand and rival Gorkha Janamukti Morcha GJM on the other.

8220;There is high tension. But there is no necessity for the Army to flag march as people are inside their homes,8221; IGP North Bengal R J S Nawla said. 8220;The Army may be asked to hold a flag march in the town on Saturday,8221; Nawla said.

GNLF supporters gheraoed the Darjeeling police station after its former councillor, K B Gurung, was stabbed when the DGHC headquarters, Lalkuthi, was gheraoed by GJM supporters and were resisted by GNLF men and DGHC employees, he said. Gurung, who was stabbed in the neck and hands, was rushed to hospital.
