Road communication between the Northeastern region and the rest of the country has been restored after a gap of 34 days with the Army putting up a Bailey bridge in place of the damaged RCC bridge on NH 31.

Following heavy rains, the RCC bridge at Kohora was washed away on September 9 bringing traffic movement on NH 31, which links the entire region to the rest of the country, to a standstill.

Since then hundreds of trucks were diverted to NH 37 through Naranarayan Setu over the Brahmaputra, causing congestion and delay in movement of essential items.

“One side of this small but vital bridge at Kohora had sunk due to the impact of the flood waters on September 9,” said Deputy Commissioner of Barpeta district R L Duara.
