KARACHI, May 7: Paralyzed because he married the woman he loved, Kunwar Ahson says he is seeking asylum, but so far no country is willing to take him and his beloved.
8220;There is still a serious threat to our lives,8221; he told the Associated Press yesterday in an interview in a small room of a home tucked away deep within a maize of small laneways. 8220;We are not safe in this country.8221;
Ahson8217;s marriage to Riffat Afridi, an ethnic Pathan, caused riots in southern Karachi that left several people dead and at least six policemen seriously injured.
Pathans, a tribal people who inhabit northwestern Pakistan, live by a strict code of conduct that forbids women marrying men of their choice.
In February Riffat Afridi shunned tradition to marry Ahson, a member of the minority Mohajir ethnic group. The marriage caused an uproar. 8220;We never expected the reaction to be that serious,8221; Ahson said.
Pathan tribesmen, who had settled in southern Karachi, called a council of elders who sentenced to death bothAfridi and her new husband.
