There is no respite in sight for Mumbai in the next 24 hours. According to the forecasters here, the system that responsible for the 162-mm rain in the last 24 hours is going to stay on, though gradually weakening in the next three days.

For this time of the year, a depression on the Western coast is normal and is responsible for heavy downpours in Konkan, Goa and Karnataka. However, the moisture-laden winds climb up on the Western Ghats and shed rains in the higher reaches, in places like Raigad and Mahabaleshwar.

What makes it different this time is another cyclonic system over south Gujarat which is accentuating the quantity of precipitation and determining its spread. Instead of allowing the moisture-laden winds to get lifted towards the Western Ghats, the combination of the two systems is bringing rain over Mumbai, which is right on the coast.

8216;8216;The system over Gujarat is complimenting the main system which is the depression on the Western coast. Though weakening gradually, it will continue to rain in Mumbai for the next 24 hours,8217;8217; said a spokesperson for the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting in Delhi.

Though the forecasters are unwilling to hazard a guess on the actual quantity of rainfall in the next few hours, they say, at this stage where the city is waterlogged, even slight amount of rain is likely to keep the city on its toes. The system over South Gujarat is weakening, but it will be 72 hours before it completely disappears.
