Another strong tremor measuring 5.9 was registered near the coast of central Peru on Saturday, the US government reported.

The epicentre of the quake that occurred at 0822 IST was located offshore, 36 kilometres south of the town of Chincha Alta, the US Geological Survey reported.

No reports of casualties or damage were immediately available.

The reading was based on the open-ended Moment Magnitude scale, now used by US seismologists, which measures the area of the fault that ruptured and the total energy released.

An 8.0 magnitude quake that hit Peru Wednesday has killed at least 500 people.
