Aligarh Muslim University has sought Z category security for Vice-Chancellor P K Abdul Aziz “in view of the prevailing tense situation”.

In its Executive Council meeting on Friday, the varsity approved several security measures to ensure law and order on its campus, including a proposal for the security cover for the vice-chancellor. The proposals include deployment of CISF personnel and appointment of a Chief Security Adviser of the rank of an IPS officer.

The five-hour meeting attended by 24 members also authorised the vice-chancellor to expedite the process for institution of a CBI enquiry to investigate the murder and the subsequent arson on campus. The university also plans to appoint a retired judge of the Supreme Court to investigate the incidents of arson and murders that occurred on the campus between June 2006 and September 2007.

The university has also dissolved the student union, which had completed its tenure. “Dates for fresh elections would soon be announced and the forthcoming elections would be held on the basis of the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations,” Public Relations Officer Rahat Abrar said.

Meanwhile, the university has also decided to offer a job to the brother of victim Mazhar Naeem, a BSc student at the university who was killed by unidentified assailants on Sunday night.

In its interim report submitted before the Executive Council, the inquiry committee instituted to probe the alleged incident of rape on campus last week also dismissed the case saying that no such incident occurred in the girls’ hostel. “The report says the rumour was motivated by a deep-rooted conspiracy to de-stabilise AMU,” Abrar said.
