Former Bollywood actress Amrita Singh today tendered an unconditional apology to Kanan Diwecha, a columnist with Star & Style magazine for a physical altercation where she allegedly beat up the woman and broke a few items of furniture. The incident happened on April 27, 1994 and since the police station had refused to take a complaint, Diwecha had filed a petition in Bombay High Court.
The petition that had been admitted came up for final hearing before the division bench of Justice N J Pandya and Justice S S Parkar today, where counsel for Singh, Shirish Gupte, tendered an affidavit apologising for the incident.
The apology, however, was not accepted by the counsel for the petitioner, Anita Naqvi, who claimed that she needed some time to go through it. The matter has now been kept for tomorrow.
Speaking for his contrite client, advocate Shirish Gupte stated: “Much water has flown under the bridge since the incident… my client has matured since then. She realises her mistake.” However, counsel for Diwecha stated that the apology had come five years too late. “It took five years for them to tender the apology. And that too because the matter has come on board. We definitely cannot finish the matter in five minutes,” she stated.
To this, Gupte replied that the apology came in five years because the matter too came up for hearing only today.
On April 27, 1994, according to the petitioner, offended at an article written by her, Amrita Singh, her husband Saif Ali Khan and their secretary Bhupendra attacked Diwecha in the office of
, where she was beaten up and almost strangulated and the office furnitures broken. The charges that could be framed against them would be tresspass and assault, it was alleged. However, when the reporter went to the Santacruz police station to make a complaint, they apparently saw Amrita Singh shaking hands with the police officer. Police subsequently refused to lodge the complaint.
The petition was therefore filed against the state police, and when the matter came up for admission before the division bench of Justice Vishnu Sahai at that time, on the orders of the court, Amrita Singh was made party to the petition.
