CHANDIGARH, August 1: Amanjit Singh of Punjab Campus stole the show as the Chandigarh Amateur Cycling Association revived its activities after the new office bearers were elected recently. Today, the association conducted 20 km road race at the Sukhna Lake. Thirtyone cyclists took part in the competitions. Simerdeep Kaur was the lone competitor in the women’s 10 km race.

A keen contest was witnessed among first six competitors who finished in the bunch. The leading group broke away midway through the 20-km road race. Amanjit Singh clocked 35 minute 05 seconds to be declared the winner. Close on the heel of the winner was Ankur Kaul of St Anne’s School. He clocked 35:22.00. Ravgunn Singh of DAV College got the third place in 36:35 minutes.

Rohit Sharma and Indivar Sharda, both of DAV College, finished fourth and fifth respectively. Harsimran Singh Brar of Government School, Sector 16 was sixth.

CACA vice-president PS Gill distributed the prizes. All competitors were given T-shirts.

Meanwhile, Rakesh Mohindra said that in future, competitions would be conducted in two categories — for foreign made cycles and Indian made cycles.

Athletic trials
The Amateur Athletic Association is conducting trials to select probables for the North Zone Junior Athletic Championships on August 3 at 8 a.m. at Sector 7 Sports Complex. The selected boys and girls will attend a coaching camp in preparations for Chandigarh’s participation in the North Zone meet to be held at Allahabad on August 20 and 21.

According to association secretary Ravinder Chaudhary, trials will be conducted in the age groups of under-20, under-18, under-16 and under-14 (boys and girls). Athletes takin part in the under-14 section will to compete in all five events of pentathlon.

The competitors must bring their original date of birth certificate and residential proof. Only the residents of Chandigarh or are studying in the city institutions are eligible for trials.

Entry closes with Ravinder Chaudhary, DAV College, Sector 10 or athletic coach Iqbal Singh, Sector 7 Sports Complex.

Sodhi, Gill elected
Mr Justice S S Sodhi (retd) has been re-elected president of the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA). Jai Singh Gill is the new secretary in place of Gurpal Singh. Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner-cum-Director Sports has been elected treasurer, according to a CLTA release here today.

Rajan Kashyap, however, will continue as chairman, until 2001 as part of his six-year tenure. Mrs Vineeta Rai, Adviser to the Administrator, will be the patron. Sarabjit Singh, DV Bhatia and RK Jain were unanimously elected vice-presidents.

CLTA in its annual general meeting yesterday also decided to host three international tennis tournaments offered by the All India Tennis Association in 1999-2000 and the ITF Women’s Tennis Tournament in December, 1999. The ITF Men’s Future Circuit Tennis Tournament will be held in January, 2000 and ITF Junior Tennis Tournament in February, 2000.

Each of first two tournaments carry a prize money of 10,000 dollars.

CLTA will conduct an ITF level-1 coaching camp in September this year for 20 top level coaches.
