8226; Saubhik Chakrabarti is right about the BJP leadership. What exactly are the ideological differences over thenbsp;nuclear deal that make the BJP look at it as a threat to our national interest? The common man gets the perception of a party eagerly waiting in the wings. The weak and inexperienced PM and the vacillating Congress, ironically, look like valiant fighters, placing the national interest above political power. The UPA is ending on a positive and redemptive note, while the BJP is about to vote with the Left 8212; a group never known to champion the national interest.

The other individualnbsp;
8226; The editorial,nbsp;8216;Individual acts8217;, makes an impressive argument in support of those who have the courage to stand up for their convictions even in the face of public ridicule. Yet, one name is prominent in its absence 8212; that of Manmohan Singh. Indeed, there is irony in the editorial8217;s strap: 8220;It takes just one person to assert the autonomy of an institution and set a pattern.8221; Despite his undoubted honesty, Singh has allowed the PM8217;s office to become subordinate to that of the Congress president. One wishes he had the courage to assert his opinions earlier.

Half truthsnbsp;
8226; Surely, Somnath Chatterjee8217;s 8220;individual act8221; of defiance is laudable. But sadly, his open declaration of bias against the BJP invalidates all claims and records of his impartiality, and his supposed defence of the speaker8217;s chair. Perhaps Chatterjee could come up with some sound and 8220;impartial8221; logic to back his stand rather than the mere unwillingness to vote along with the BJP?

Whose rights?nbsp;
8226; Rakesh Shukla contends that 8220;narco-analysis8230; violates our fundamental rights8221;. With all due respect to the legal fraternity specialising in criminal cases, truth is often the first casualty in legal battles, as lawyers who defend criminals are usually more concerned about justice whatever that may mean for their clients. Why should there be such stress on fundamental rights in criminal cases when the offenders often happen to have committed murder or worse, or attempted to bribe witnesses or ensured that the litigation dragged on for years?

Sudan8217;s call
8226; The application for the arrest of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir by the ICC prosecutor, Luiacute;s Moreno-Ocampo, is a landmark in the history of international law. This move may help subvert al-Bashir8217;s atrocious regime finally. The Sudanese government cannot hold the world at ransom. It must pay for the Darfur genocide.
