Incessant rains and floods in many parts of the country have taken a heavy toll on the industrial sector. Many corporates, including ONGC, Reliance and Essar, are being forced to shut their units as a safety precaution and access to both finished products and raw materials have virtually slowed down to a trickle.
Production at India8217;s largest gasfields in Bassein and Panna/Mukta and Tapti in Mumbai offshore8212;which fuels many industrial units in Western India8212;was stopped by the ONGC following flooding of its processing plant at Hazira in Gujarat.
8220;All gas production from the fields connected to Hazira has been suspended. The Hazira plant is in no position to take gas from the fields and so the wells had to be shut,8221; said ONGC chairman and managing director R S Sharma.
Heavy rains have inundated large parts of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat and plants located in Gujarat and Maharashtra have been hit hard.
The Hazira gas processing plant of ONGC, which receives gas mainly from Bassein and Panna/Mukta and Tapti fields, had to be shut down last night due to flooding. Officials said it would take a couple of days to clear the Hazira facility.
