NEW DELHI, Jan 16: Tourist transporters are up in arms against the hike in the parking fee for coaches at the domestic and international terminals of the Indira Gandhi International Airport. The fees has gone up from Rs 20 to Rs 200 since August.

“For many years the tariff was Rs 20 which was increased to Rs 50 in August last year and by October it was unjustifiably hiked to Rs 200,” lamented the president of Indian Tourist Transporters Association (ITTA) Sarbjeet Singh.

“The worst part is that even if our coach, which carries tourists, cabin crew and staff members to the airport, goes there three times in a day we are made to pay the fee each time,” said a transporter Harinder Singh adding that even if they did not park the vehicle they are made to pay this amount which is termed as `entry fee.’

The ITTA has written to the airport director about their predicament. The letter states that the parking charges being charged by a private company M/s Mahesh Enterprises who have been given a contract by the Airports Authority of India, were very high. The terms and conditions mentioned on the back of tickets issued by the company says that the entry is only for four hours, the parking is at the owners’ risk and the fee is for operators of coaches picking and dropping passengers at the airport.

There are over 700 tourist coaches which operate in Delhi every day, out of which nearly 200 coaches visit the airport every day.

“This has been finalised by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) headquarters. The contract was awarded to a new party and they have hiked the fee,” said Airport Director Harbans Kumar refusing to further comment on the issue.
