A day after closing Lucknow University LU sine die, the university administration on Saturday announced that it would be opened from Monday, albeit in a 8220;phased manner8221;. According to Vice-Chancellor Prof Ram Prakash Singh, the university would organise special classes and lectures from Monday for students who have applied for various competitive examinations.
8220;We don8217;t want 8216;general8217; category students to suffer from the untoward situation prevailing in the university,8221; Singh said on Saturday. 8220;Since many students would appear in upcoming competitive examinations like UGC-NET and PCS J we have decided to hold special classes for them.8221;
University officials clarified that students who wish to enroll for these special classes should report to their provosts with the admit card of the competitive examination they are appearing for.
Meanwhile, briefing the media at the V-C8217;s residence today, LU officials stuck to their stand of getting the university hostels evacuated, to purge the 8220;criminal elements8221;. The officials, however, today relaxed Singh8217;s earlier stated deadline of 24 hours, giving students a day or two to vacate the hostels. 8220;Many hostel inmates have come here from distant places and cannot leave their hostel immediately,8221; LU proctor Dr A N Singh said. 8220;So we decided to extend the 24-hour deadline.8221;
But he stressed that all 8220;illegal inmates should vacate their rooms at the earliest, or they would be flushed out and handed over to the police8221;. According to LU officials, over 50 8220;illegal inmates8221; have taken shelter in different LU hostels, with some even having been booked on attempt-to-murder charges under Section 307 of IPC.
Officials said Butler Hostel houses most illegal inmates, followed by Lal Bahadur Shastri and Jubilee hostels. The V-C had stressed yesterday that the hostels had turned into a den of anti-social elements and criminals.
Meanwhile, students kept up their protests against the LU administration8217;s decision to cancel the forthcoming students8217; union elections, with 500-odd students staging a sit-in protest at different spots in the campus. The agitating students shouted slogans against the V-C, even as students8217; leaders organised meetings at the students8217; cabinet office at the university.
